Born in Budapest. He is a media artist, in 1979 he emigrated to West-Berlin, and has lived and worked in Berlin since then. In the few years leading up to that, starting from 1974, he was an active participant in the Hungarian underground art world, and was part of several conceptual exhibitions in Budapest, the Netherlands and East-Berlin. Aside from photographs, he also created Super 8 and 16 mm films. He received his diploma from the German Academy of Film, and during his studies already won a special prize "For a First Piece" at the Video Rome Video Festival for his work, "The Fiction of Existence" (1980). He received many awards and scholarships later on as well, including the 1. Marler Video-Kunst-Preis special prize (1984) and the main prize at the DokumenART festival in Neubranenburg (1992). The questions that interested him in his photography earlier on also appear later in various videos, films and installations, in a medium-appropriate form. These questions center around 4 themes: works that look at the origin of meaning; works in which he tried to depict space and movement; his performance documents, which are examples of the artistic use of photographs; and his sociographic works, in which he questions the traditions of the field. He has recently created several award-winning photofilms which are a synthesis of still and moving images, with director Katja Pratschke (Fremdkörper, 2000; Rien ne va plus, 2005). (2011)
