Description:
Hámos's interest in Berlin began with a film experience in his youth, when he saw Walter Ruttman's Symphony of a Great City, which depicts the thriving, pulsating metropolis between the two world wars. In the 1970s he emigrated to Berlin, but upon arrival he was welcomed by the oppressive atmosphere of the city, as it was in the early stages of post-war reconstruction and was divided by the Wall. The staggering difference was the inspiration for the video. Fragments from the Ruttman film intermingle with images of the cityscape of the 1990s as we follow the history of Berlin from the period between the two world wars through the takeover of the national socialists to the completion of the high-tech skyscrapers of Potsdamer Platz. In addition the medium of film, video and hologram are employed to depict the shifts between decades. (Evelin Páll)
