The emergence of perspective was intimately linked to the development of modern science, which in turn went hand in hand with demoting Providence God to watchmaker. The explorers of artificial intelligence are end-of-millennium alchemists confident that they will be able to strike the light of intelligence in a mechanical machine, that the syntax-driven metal nest will one day hatch the intentional agent. The adequate artistic medium today is the computer, which rivals the brain as concerns its capacity to create images ex nihilo. Plato’s numbers are becoming images and are transforming our visual world. Perspective is stripped of all its prior metaphysics and is made capable of rendering any possible world actual, even that of the Cyclopes. The computer artist her/himself is a computer programmed to be God; a computer which does not accurately represent “reality” but creates worlds from nothing. (...) (J.K.)
