Description:
A column positioned on a mirror at first seems to be a simple object yet this is in complete harmony with the artistic ambition to confront the spectator with a clear concept. The origin of the concept is the threefold nature of all visual experience: the real image, the virtual image revealed by the mirror and the imaginary image created in the mind, partly contradict yet also complement each other. Perspective itself, at the same time, still appears with a changing intensity dependent on the spectator’s physical and intellectual stance. The perspective of a real object and its reflection in the mirror, however, are truly different: the spectator in space is at the same height as the middle of the column, therefore the foreshortening of the column in both directions is insignificant. The mirror, on the other hand, shows the column from a worm’s perspective. The view point of the spectator is now 1.7 meters from the floor. (...) (É.T.B., Cs.T.)
