Description:
(...) the experiment by which perspective was supposedly discovered gives evidence of an extraordinary mode of thinking, which could also open the way to our anamorphoses. (...) Filippo Brunelleschi stood the curious onlookers at the gate of the Dom, so that they would look out from the edifice, in the direction of the Battistero. He put into the hand of one of them the panel picture with the hole in its centre, the unpainted back side held toward the viewer, who was then asked to look closely, with one eye pressed against the hole, at the baptistry. The little master then with lightening speed held the mirror up before the picture, covering the chapel in front of the peeping burgher, then asked aloud, so that those standing in the back could also hear:
– What do you see, Milord?
– Well, the Battistero, Ser Filippo! – his reply astounded the audience. (...) (I.O.)
