Description:
Today we treat the entrances of medieval churches primarily as independent structures of picture and building elements, and this approach is equal to the creation of a separate history of entrance typology. Consequently, they are not judged in the overall context of architecture, but rather autonomously, and in this process, perspective interpretations are pushed to the background. Georg Dehio provides us with a basically coherent description of the medieval effects of spatial perspective, describing the entrance as the optical effect of internal space projected externally. Dehio writes the following in connection with the columned, stepped inlay of entrances: "… should pillars and sticks have been placed in the corners, then it would create the most outstanding impression; the entrance becomes a concave mirror which projects the internal perspective to the outside, shrinking the image of the pillars, pilasters and arcades".
