Born in Odessa. Lives and works in Vienna and Karlsruhe. Polyartist, art- and media theoretician, curator. He is, since 1999, Chairman and CEO of the ZKM - Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. He studied literature, medicine, logic, philosophy and film in Paris and Vienna. He wrote his doctoral thesis on mathematical logic (modal logic). He was lecturer of "Theory of Form" between 1976-81, and visiting professor of Design and Art education at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna between 1981-84. Visiting professor at the College of Art and Design, Halifax, Canada in 1981. Visiting professor of "Media art" in 1979-80, lecturer of "Perception theory" in 1981, and professor of photography at the Gesamthochschule Kassel between 1982-85. Between 1984 and 1989, he was Associate Professor of Video and Digital Arts at the Center of Media Study of the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. Between 1989-94, he was Director of the Institut für Neue Medien at the Staedelschule in Frankfurt/Main. Professor of Visual Media Art at the Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna from 1984 until 1998. Since 1986, he was artistic advisor, and from 1992 until 1995, artistic director of the Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. He was Chief Curator of the Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz, Austria, from 1993-98, and since 1993, he has been Austrian Commissioner of the Venice Biennale. (2009)
