Biography:
Born in Amsterdam in 1964. Since 1985 he works as a freelance high-end software developer. In 1986/87 he worked as an assistant photographer, and 1987/90 as a camera assistant for TV and film. 1991/94 he was Head of Software Development at the Institut für Bildmedien, ZKM, Karlsruhe (Germany).
May has realised the software development for Jeffrey Shaw’s works since 1989, including 'The Legible City' (1989, Nagoya, Boston, Sydney); 'The Virtual Museum' (1991, Art Fair Frankfurt). He has also collaborated artistically with Jeffrey Shaw on the 'Televirtual Chit-Chat' (Imagina '93, Monte Carlo). His projects of personal software development and artwork include 'The Table With Spirits' (1993, Ars Electronica, Linz; Multimediale 3, Karlsruhe), and in the same year, the software development of a 'Particle System' for SOFTIMAGE. He collaborated with Bill Seaman on 'The World Generator' (first at Dutch Electronic Art Festival, Rotterdam, 1996) and 'The World Generator / The Engine of Desire' (first at ZKM Opening Exhibition, networked to England, Karlsruhe, 1997), on which they also worked during a residency at C3 in Budapest.
