Born in Szombathely. Lives and works in Budapest. He studied Art History and Hungarian Literature at ELTE University (1963/68). He was a research fellow in Art History at the Research Institute for Art History of the Hungarian Academy of Siences (MTA, 1969/86) and later a Guest Professor of Art History at the University Lumiére in Lyon (1987/88). He was the chief curator of the XIX.-XX. Century Art Department of the Hungarian National Gallery of Budapest (1988/95) and the general director of the Műcsarnok (Kunsthalle, 1995/2001), currently he is the director of the Research Institute for Art History at MTA (2000-). Through out his significant teaching carrier he was a research fellow at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts (1989/96), currently he is a Professor and the Head of Department at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts (1994-). His main field of research is the XIX.-XX. century art. He is the editor of numerous anthologies. He has considerable publications in the field of photography, cinema and different medium theories: 'Művészet/elmélet. Tanulmányok 1970-1991' ['Art/Theory.
