Biography:
Born in Erkelenz. He studied in Cologne, Tübingen, Munich, graduated as a Physical Training Instructor (1959). He got his Ph.D. in 1963 and habilitated in Educational Sciences and Philosophical Anthropology at the University of Marburg where he was also a professor (1973/79). From 1979 until his death he was professor of Sociology at the Free University in Berlin (Institute for Sociology and Anthropology). The main field of his interest was questions of Cultural Sociology. He has published papers on socialization and education; family sociology; theory of civilization, especially history of the body; philosophical and historical anthropology; sociology of imagination and aesthetics. After 1991 he organized international transdisciplinary seminars in the field of cultural anthropology with Ch. Wulf.
