Biography:
Born in Vancouver. He studied at the University of Victoria, graduated 1969. He has exhibited at the University of British Columbia Fine Arts Gallery (1967), Victoria Art Gallery (1968); and was included in the 1970s Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition New York Correspondence School, and Morris/Trasov's Image Bank Postcard Show. In the year of 1969 Metcalfe married artist Kate Craig, collaborating together as Dr. Brute and Lady Brute. He was a co-founder of the Vancouver artist-run centre Western Front (1973- ). Metcalfe also produced and performed in film and video extensively from 1972. His latest works 'The Attic Project' (2001/02) consisting of replicas of 5th and 6th century B.C. Greek vessels was a bogus piece to critique museum seriousness, his gouache paintings were presented in Winchester Galleries (Victoria, B.C., Canada). He won the 2008 Governor General’s Awards in Visual Arts.
