Virtual space inhabits the history of representation — and particularly the representation of perspective — right from the start. Emerging as much from the “rationality” of urban Renaissance culture as from the integration of theologized ideologies of infinity in the representation of space, perspective poses an interesting problem for a technological world picture in which infinity has no fixed—perhaps calculable is better—position, in which the urban is more transactional than material, and in which sight is temporalized in the interface rather than spatialized though the window.
