Description:
In music, space has a twofold manifestation: first, as the imaginary space created by sounds and their interrelations, and second, as the actual space of the performance. Both spaces have played various roles throughout the successive periods in the history of music - both are strongly style-dependent elements of the composition. The hierarchical structures between notes have given rise to various concepts of tonality - theoretical constructs which characterize each successive period. The incorporation of the features of the actual space of the performance into the process of composition was largely a development of the 20th century, not in the least as a result of a radical conceptual shift and the technical advances ushered in by electronic recording technologies.
