As we reread the writings of Umberto Boccioni, we may be surprised at the apparently irrelevant, marginal role that the criticism of the traditional instruments of three-dimensional representation on the plane surface occupies in these works. In the foreword to the catalogue of the exhibition entitled Les peintres futuristes italiens (Italian Futurist Painters), held in Paris in February 1912, there was just one explicit reference to the question of perspective (which was reproduced with some variation in the catalogues of all the European stations – London, Berlin, Brussels – of the travelling exhibition): "Perspective, as understood by the majority of painters, has the same value for us as that is usually attributed to an engineering project".
