Description:
In 1992, Neil Stevenson described in his book "Snowcrash" an application called "earth" - a tool that allows users to browse, navigate and zoom in a virtual representation of the real world in order to get information. This information is accessible, integrated and updated via a network. Hereby the virtual representation of the earth is used as a metaphor to organise information. At the same time, with no knowledge of the above, ART+COM started to develop the application "terra_vision", in which a virtual earth is used as a metaphor to organise information. Although terravision is not nearly as phantastic and elaborated as Neil Stevenson’s description of the "earth", it is a real tool that allows users to browse, navigate and zoom in a virtual representation of the real world in order to get information. This information is accessible, integrated and updated via a network. Stevenson and ART+COM were both very surprised at the moment they heard about each other’s application. (J.S.)
