18th century: Chess enthusiast Móric Benyovszky visits Frace, Kempelen travels to Versailles and Paris to present his famous “Turk”; the Reform Period: József Szén’s journey to Paris, Alexandre’s visit to Pest, the Pest-Paris correspondence chess games; second half of the 19th century: Ignác Kolisch in France, his victory at the great Parisian chess tournament, successes of György Mayer and Imre Engel at the solo correspondence games organized by the French; Duchamp’s visit to Budapest. He was captain of the French side at the French-Hungarian correspondence team match. The 20th century is only briefly touched on by the lecture. (I.B.)
