In contemplating the space of the icon and the way the forms within it (edifices, constructions, landscapes, etc.) are represented, one immediately notices that the borders of the architecture, the contour lines of the various objects or the trajectories of the landscape do not converge in an orderly fashion within the image, into a single point, as occurs in classical paintings; on the contrary, their orthogonals seem to be inverted, as if they were about to fly outside, onto an imaginary invisible horizon, situated somewhere in front of the icon.Still, no commentator has thought of studying more minutely the extent to which the syntagma reverse perspective fits the intentions of the icon painters and their theological vision on the space of the icon.
