Description:
(...) Given then, two burning candles in the space of a gallery, whose flames are 'observed' through the tight frame of a video camera, the image-signal is transmitted to an image interpreter computer program, called BigEye (© Tom Demeyer 1995). The program responds to image changes registered on live or recorded video with the generation of MIDI sound signals, whose characteristics can be brought into correlation with the nature of the image events. The dimensions, speed, appearance or disappearance of the visual occurrences, their acceleration or deceleration can be brought into correlation with sounds of various duration and pitch. I later linked these MIDI sound signals with pre-recorded sound-files inserted in a virtual sampler – the sound-reproductions of some twenty versions of human inhalation and exhalation. These sounds emit from the two heavy-duty speakers attached to the computer, which are placed near the candles. (...) (Sz.K.)
