Description:
One of Raetz’s favourite contexts is the precarious space between the second and third dimensions, and this approaches the field of anamorphosis, an intense preoccupation of the artist. The anamorphosis, above and beyond the simple magic of illusion, is an extremely dynamic form of expression eminently suited to Raetz’s artistic approach. It is a method of pictorial projection, in which the artistry of the representation is as significant as the subject matter itself, the latter being hidden through precise and calculated distortion in a seemingly confused array of appearances, and visible in its original state only from a specific viewpoint. Dramatically revealing the fictional nature of pictorial appearances, the anamorphosis demonstrates that each pictorial reality is subject to its own laws and can only present one projection at a time as a gradual approximation of the targeted reality.
