(...) Torments of Interpretation. For a clever game of perspective, two contiguous rooms, the one in accelerated perspective, the other in retarded perspective, connected together from a point of view that gives the illusion of one room, so that we do not perceive the difference in depth between the two rooms. So to appear on each side of the viewers, our eye, abused by the geometry insulated in the space, interprets their difference in distance as a difference in scale. Incapable of putting each in its place, we choose to resolve the perspective conflict by the most improbable solution – that which was envisaged by Swift for his Gulliver: a world peopled by dwarfs and giants.
